5 out of 5 stars Fun review of some difficult math   October 17, 2007

I am a special education teacher and have found this software a great review tool for fraction concepts in particular. Students are much more interested in knowing which number is the denominator, for example, if they need that information to get points in a game and get to the next level. I like that you can choose to play the game with or without troggles (monsters that chase you) too. Although I have the windows 95 version (which was available used at low cost), it's worked fine for me on XP too. I'm very pleased with it.

5 out of 5 stars math munchers   April 2, 2008

We purchased Math Munchers for our second grader and he really enjoys it. He was procrastinating with his math schoolwork and was bringing a lot of it home. After practicing with Munchers he understands it much more. I cant say that it is a good way to introduce new mathematical styles, but it is good for practicing the stuff they've already heard about in their school. In other words, from what I've seen, it is good for rote learning and memorization of the simpler math that adults eventually just "know."

I was a little disappointed, it's not like the one I had in grade school. But the basics of the game are still the same. So, I have just passed this on to my second grader, he's getting a kick out of it.

Like this product, it's fun and keeps the kids engaged. It's also challenging enough to keep their interest.

2 out of 5 stars Old program, beware which version you get   July 25, 2008

The program has changed hands a few times and if you get a newer one, it may run better. Riverdeep and/or The Learning Company usually fix up old programs that they acquire, and the program might not be too bad if the interface were improved and the installation worked as it should.

BUT the one we got (elsewhere, not here) was version 1.1, and came from the original manufacturer (MECC). I'm looking at a photo here on this product listing that shows the MECC logo on the box, not The Learning Company. So I'd suggest asking the vendor what version is provided.

We could not install version 1.1 correctly under Windows XP, and only after some experimentation could we run it at all, loading from the CD and not from the hard drive. Once running, the program has no means of exiting from within the play area, or by any familiar navigation methods that a child will expect. Instead you have to use the very ungamelike method of opening the File option on the top menu bar, then pressing Exit. The menu bar is not very obvious, either, so it's a bother.

The math activities are okay. If you can get it to run, it's not a total loss. But basically (at our level, anyway) this is a process of drilling the results of specific equations, not intuitive learning of "concepts." If you are looking for a "fun" way to perform rote memorization, I suppose this is an improvement over traditional times tables or the like. But the jolly-looking cartoon animation suggests more entertainment than you actually get. The beginning math level is probably appropriate for third grade and up, perhaps an advanced second grader.

Perhaps the program is better for older kids - I don't know yet. But if I had known about the different versions floating around out there, I'd have made sure to get a newer one at the very least. Since you can memorize times tables without a computer, a better software purchase might be one of the many other game-type math learning programs out there. We have a few of them (Cluefinders for instance) and although the math component is not nearly as dense or compact as MathMunchers, the game is more fun and the navigation much easier.
